Notion system is based on two kinds of 'things': Notions and Relationships.

A notion is nothing more, but nothing less either, than a representation of something you think or talk about. It might be completely abstract or a physical thing (e.g. persons, illnesses, astronomical objects, projects or whatever so).

Between notions you can have any number and any kind of meaningful relationships.

Relationships can have, but don't need to, auxiliary data.

Example:

I have a relationship 'is married to' with my wife. Data belonging to this relationship is the marriage date and the marriage place (itself a notion). This is what we call in the context of Notion System an elementary piece of knowledge.

The ovals represent each a particlar notion. The arrows and the green rectangles represent the relations.

As you can see, there might exist relations with only data and no target notion to which they point.

The whole of data/information/knowledge in de knowledge base forms something that is a semantic network.
